On February 13, 1692, Glencoe was the scene of one of the bloodiest incidents in Scottish history. A group of soldiers, posing as friendly visitors, attacked their hosts – The Macdonald Clan – while sleeping. About 40 people were cruelly murdered. Since then, there have been reports of hearing screams in the valley and sightings of reenactments of the massacre, particularly on the date of the anniversary of this terrible event.
Inveraray Castle is apparently home to several ghosts. The most famous is perhaps that of the young harpist who, according to legend, was murdered by the men of the Duke of Argyll. It is said that whenever a family member is about to die, you can hear the harp music from the MacArthur Room. The last report of this phenomenon happened in 1949 when the 10th Duke died. In the Brown Library there are reports of music played by a bagpiper on the balcony and in the old kitchen a cheerful spirit laughing enthusiastically has been heard on some occasions.
It is nestled between the lodgings of the Bishop of Argyll & the Isles and the Old Oban Baptist church, The Alexandra Hotel enjoys one of the most spectacular locations in Scotland. The views across Oban Bay to the island of Kerrera and beyond are an instant joy. Colorful sunsets, seabirds of all kinds and seals can be spotted most evenings.
The interior of this impressive Victorian building was completely renovated, whilst still retaining many of its magnificent original features. The beautiful glass frontage allows guests to soak up stunning views every minute of the day.
On April 16, 1746, Culloden Moor witnessed a bloody battle between government troops and Prince Bonnie Charlie’s rebel army, known as the Jacobite Army which was formed by some of the Scottish Clans. In a very quick but effective battle, the government troops massacred thousands of soldiers.
Since then, reports of the screams and sounds of swords in combat have been reported.
A Visitor Center is opened onsite and includes a Museum, shop, cafeteria and battlefield visits. Click Here for further details.
