Algarve is a long stretch of land that covers the whole of Portugal’s southern coast. It’s the best holiday destinations in the whole of Europe, known for its fantastic white sandy beaches and clear blue waters, its privileged climate and top-notch golf courses.
Algarve has everything from modern cities, to small fisherman’s villages, water parks and zoos, and the Ria Formosa Natural Park, famous for its beauty.
Ria Formosa Natural Park:-
Wetland of international importance, the Ria Formosa is full of canals, islands, marshes and barrier islands, stretching 60kms along the Algarve coast, between the beaches of Manta Rota and Garrão.
In the diversity of ecosystems there are varied fauna, including numerous species of birds. One of the rarest is the “galinha-sultana (sultan hen)”, symbol of the Natural Park, and a type of bird that you can’t find anywhere else in the country.
Besides fishing, salt extraction and harvesting of shellfish, there are other traditional activities in Ria like creating gastronomic delicacies such as fish soup or rice razor clam, which you can be enjoyed peacefully in some restaurants on the seafront.
One of the nicest species that can be found here, is the Portuguese water dog. This is a breed of dogs that helps the fishermen in their toil, diving and catching fish that got trapped in nets.
The Natural Park of Ria Formosa can be visited throughout the year, although you should avoid the high summer season if you’re seeking peace and tranquility.
